However, even in the comics, the line is sensible, as anger is often described as a hot fluid (explaining the napalm blood) or fire. While the “burn you all” line exists in the comics despite the blood motif, the line makes more sense in GLTAS because of the differing fire motif. (an explosive substance) In GLTAS, they have a motif of flames, rather than blood, though the “breath weapon” attack is visually similar to the “blood spewing” attack of the comics. In the comics, Red Lanterns usually attack by spewing corrosive rage-blood, which is described to be similar to napalm. While Atrocitus may have conquered Volkrieg and turned the warlords against each other specifically to make Razer a Red Lantern, causing possibly planet-wide war is sure to make more than one person angry and/or hateful. For in-universe reasons, people from Shyir Rev’s race and Volkrieg became Red Lanterns as byproducts of the strife he caused on Colony 12 (Shyir Rev’s colony) and Volkrieg. One individual even has Razer’s model, though with a different outfit and without shoulder spikes and “horns.” For out-universe reasons, the makers of GLTAS were recycling models because CGI is expensive. If one observes the crowd in “Loss”, one can see that some Red Lanterns use models for Shyir Rev’s people. In his hateful actions, he inspired hate/rage in someone else: so much hate/rage, in fact, that the victim became a Red Lantern. To do this, he conquered Volkrieg, turned the warlords against each other, and killed Ilana. As an example, Atrocitus wanted to make Razer a Red Lantern. In their blind quest for justice by means of revenge, they incite strife, whether intentionally or as a byproduct. In a way, the hate and rage of the Red Lanterns is infectious. Of course, it should be noted that the line says “your” minds, so it’s directed at someone else, rather than being used to describe the Red Lanterns. Their pain can be either emotional (Dex-Starr, Razer) or physical (Ratchet, Skallox), but they may experience both, as it’s unlikely that only Razer and Atrocitus have painful ring equipping sequences. In addition, pain is probably a prerequisite for being hateful all the time. The pain stems from the circumstances leading to their becoming Red Lanterns or the pain they may experience simply from being hateful all the time. The line “and twist your minds to pain and hate” incorporates the great pain Red Lanterns experience. Rather, it was the dramatic failure of his plans and subsequent imprisonment, and his hatred towards the people who ruined his plans. Though someone (at least purportedly) dear to him died, it’s clear that this death did not cause rage in him. Despite claiming to love Duloc, the local Green Lantern, he killed him through poison in the hopes that he would be Duloc’s successor. He believed he could use the power of a Green Lantern for good. Ragnar, learning how Hal Jordan acquired his ring, sought to become a Green Lantern.

At this point, a Red Lantern ring shows up. After 40 years, he begins to hallucinate until it drives him mad from rage. On the twentieth year, he finds a “friend”: hatred, which he considers to be a constant companion. His tendrils were amputated, and after going on a hunger strike, he was force-fed by robotic arms. He was arrested, shot upon, and sentenced to be imprisoned for 80 years. (outside of special suits) Wishing to meet real friends, Ratchet left his pod. Ratchet lived in a society that refrained from any sort of physical contact. While several Red Lanterns’ rage stems from the death of loved ones (hence the line “ ripped from a corpse so freshly dead”) not all of them do. According to this ( ) link, the Red Lanterns’ rage stems from loss. To a degree, the GLTAS version makes more sense than the original. The GLTAS version replaces the Media Watchdog treats with lines that preserve much of the spirit of the letter. The original is more grim and outrageous in its declaration of hatred.

The difference between these two is the middle two lines. We fill mens’ souls with darkest dread, And twist your minds to pain and hate. Ripped from a corpse so freshly dead, Together with our hellish hate, We’ll burn you all-that is your fate!” For this reason, it may be inaccurate in respect to the comics’ depiction of Red Lanterns. This post uses primarily GLTAS canon, rather than comic canon. Though familiarity with GLTAS or the Green Lantern mythos helps, this post may also be read by people with only a small degree of familiarity with the premise of the Red Lantern Corps.
